The SI-VT2 Velocity Trap from Specialised Imaging is a precision instrument that enables ultra-high-speed cameras studying ballistic events to automatically adjust image triggering in real time.
If the velocity of a projectile in a ballistic impact experiment varies – then the time it hits the target will change. The velocity trap enables ultra-high-speed cameras to automatically adjust image triggering in real time to account for variations in projectile velocity. This unique capability translates into a significant benefit where a 5% variation in velocity can be the difference between seeing and missing an event all together.
Using external triggers, such as our SI-OT4, the SI-VT2 instantaneously measures a projectiles velocity and outputs a trigger signal to other instrumentation such as a camera or data capture unit. Users can configure this trigger output to be sent so that your camera/data recorder starts at the exact time when the projectile is at a certain distance from the target. Performing measurements at capture rates up to 3,330 measurements per second – the SI-VT2 measures projectile velocity and then provides a consistent data capture trigger output relative to the projectile time to target, irrespective of velocity variation.
Based upon this advanced technology, a built-in velocity chronograph for accurate triggering has become a standard feature on all Specialised Imaging ultra high-speed framing and video cameras. The velocity trap feature is proven to significantly reduce the likelihood of missing extremely fast events such as recording the cracking of a ceramic plate or back face deformation of a carbon fibre panel when hit by a projectile of variable velocity.
